As of September 1st 2014 a new Special Education Needs Code of Practice has come into force. Alec Hunter Academy is committed to supporting students and being an inclusive school and we believe that each student has individual and unique needs. We aim to provide all students with strategies in a supportive environment and to give them meaningful access to the National Curriculum.
Special Educational Needs are categorised, using the 2014 Special Educational Needs Code of Practice, according to the degree of support each individual requires. This works on a graduated approach and the first level of support begins with High Quality Teaching within the classroom, followed by strategic intervention by the Student Development Team where necessary.
When pupils are regarded as requiring Special Educational Needs support, this usually means they have additional learning needs. Students may receive additional support from within the school. Support or advice may be sought from outside agencies. We currently have 88 students on our SEN profile.
Those in need of the most intensive level of support are given a statement of special educational need. Where necessary this statement will at an appropriate time, and within 3 years, become an Educational Health Care Plan. We currently have 11 students with a statement.
Parent and pupil voice is an important part of these reforms and we will be working cohesively with outside agencies, parents, students and all concerned to make sure that this is central to our newly developed policies.
