Aims

KS3

At Key Stage 3 the curriculum aims for students to build on the knowledge and understanding, skills, attributes and values they have acquired and developed during primary school. The Learning for Life curriculum at Alec Hunter acknowledges and addresses the changes that young people experience, beginning with transition to secondary school, the challenges of adolescence and their increasing independence. It teaches the knowledge and skills which will equip them for the opportunities and challenges of life. Students learn to manage diverse relationships, their online lives, and the increasing influence of peers and the media. The curriculum is taught in a spiral approach so that students build on their learning year on year. The core themes are:

– Core Theme 1: Rights, responsibilities and British Values

– Core Theme 2: Celebrating diversity and equality

– Core Theme 3: Relationships and sex education

– Core Theme 4: Staying safe online

– Core Theme 5: Health and wellbeing

– Core Theme 6: Life beyond school

At Alec Hunter, we recognise the multi-cultural, multi-faith and ever-changing nature of the UK.  We also understand the vital role we have in ensuring individuals are not subjected to intimidation or radicalisation by those wishing to unduly, or illegally influence them.  At Alec Hunter, we educate students to and follow equal opportunities guidance to guarantee there will be no discrimination against an individual or group, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political or financial status, or similar.

The five key British Values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs are underpinned by the school values which are throughout all elements of the curriculum but none more so than in Learning for Life where we, through the ‘Living in the Wider World’ strand prepare students for life beyond the formal, examined curriculum ensuring that we promote and reinforce British Values to all our students.

KS4

At Key Stage 4, students deepen their knowledge and understanding, extend and rehearse skills, and further explore attitudes, values and attributes acquired during key stage 3. The Learning for Life curriculum reflects the fact that students are moving towards an independent role in adult life, taking on greater responsibility for themselves and others.

How is Learning for Life is taught?
