KS3 - Technology

Year 7 KS3 Curriculum has been designed to be inspiring, rigorous and practical that encourages our students to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems, both as individuals and as members of a team. We also aim to make links to designs and designers throughout history, providing opportunities for children to critically reflect upon and evaluate their designs. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. This gives the learning purpose and relevance to the student encouraging them to develop life skills.

The Year 8 KS3 Curriculum has been designed to give a variety of creative and practical activities, we teach the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an interactive process of designing and making. Through this process, the aim is to develop the pupils’ technical knowledge and vocabulary in relationship to graphic design, food technology, materials and engineering.

Year 9: Graphics allows pupils to explore designing in both drawing, modelling and CAD. Pupils can use design influences and use real life topics for their projects that prepare them for a GCSE in D&T (paper and board’s route / graphics). Each segment of the subject is a mini version of the assessment objectives that are needed for the N.E.A for year 10/11.

Engineering allows pupils to explore and work with metals. This mini project has been designed to include cutting, shaping, finishing and joining aspects of metal technology. Each segment of the subject is a mini version of the assessment objectives that are needed for the N.E.A for year 10/11

KS3 - Food Technology

Year 7 - Students learn basic cooking skills such as knife skills, how to use the cooker (hob, oven and grill), reduction sauces, shallow frying. Students learn how to work in the kitchen environment, safely and hygienically while cooking dishes such as fruit crumble, chicken nuggets, homemade pizza, pasta salad, American muffins and fresh fruit salad. They are introduced to healthy eating by studying the Eatwell guide

Year 8 - Students develop their practical skills learning how to make bread, pastry and roux sauce. They start to learn the basic principles of food science and how to carry out a food science investigation.  We extend their knowledge of nutrition by exploring the function of macro and micronutrients helping students make informed choices about their own diet. We hope to foster a love of cooking by teaching students how to make every day, economical family meals such as cottage pie, pasta cheese, quiche, fish cakes and delicious treats like Victoria Sandwich cake.

Year 9 - Our aim is to equip students for life by teaching them to be smart shoppers, considering the impact of their food choices on their health, their pocket, the environment and on animal welfare. We develop their knowledge of food science and their practical skills by cooking dishes such as lasagne, chicken curry with naan bread, risotto, fruit pie and lemon and elderflower cake.

KS 4 - Level 1-2 Technical Award in Engineering

Level 1 / 2 Technical Award in Engineering  provides learners with a more practical alternative to GCSE study. The qualification introduces students to the various strands available within the engineering field, providing learners with the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and understanding through tasks set in realistic work-related contexts.

KS4 - gcse Food Preparation and Nutrition

Food preparation and nutrition will equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating. The curriculum will encourage students to cook and enable them to make informed decisions about a wide range of further learning opportunities and career pathways as well as developing vital life skills that enable them to feed themselves and others affordably. We aim to foster their understanding of the essential role that food plays in society, how to eat well, minimise their impact on the environment and share their love of food with other.

KS4 - level 1-2 in Hospitality and Catering
