SMART LEARNING BEHAVIOURS
At Alec Hunter Academy we believe that students who perform to a high standard regularly display certain learning behaviours and attributes. These behaviours will not only prepare them for success in school but in their future, whatever it may be.
Our young people are growing up in a rapidly changing world. The jobs they may end up doing may not have been created yet and the technologies they end up using not yet invented. According to the OECD, supporting young people to develop key knowledge, skills and behaviours will become ever more important to ensure they are equipped to thrive in their futures (OECD Future of Education and Skills 2030).
Our SMART Learning Behaviours Framework guides students on the key attributes they can develop to help them to feel confident and prepared to navigate their future successfully. These qualities will help them to be able to develop into goal-orientated independent learners with strong communication skills who can collaborate, take on new challenges and think deeply and critically to make informed ethical decisions.
Students at Alec Hunter Academy will be graded regularly on the progress they are making towards developing these behaviours and skills. They will also be given opportunities to reflect upon their progress and learn about different ways in which they can foster and practise these habits in the context of the school environment.
Alongside the knowledge-rich and skills-based curriculum our students engage with each day, a focus on developing these characteristics will help to improve their success in school. It is by asking students to focus on these learning behaviours that we hope the outcome will be that students are able to:
- foster healthy and collaborative interpersonal relationships,
- develop strong mechanisms (such as metacognitive skills) to support their own well-being,
- work towards being self-motivated independent learners,
- learn how to achieve success in their exams and termly assessments.
